President Trump issued three executive orders on May 25 that make it harder for federal workers to do their job. Machinists Union members are among thousands of federal civil servants who support our military, fight wildfires and care for wounded veterans.
Under the guise of “civil service reform,” each of the orders take away rights from federal employees.

“The executive orders signed by President Trump single out federal employees and destroy workplace safeguards that have been in place since the 1800s,” said IAM International President Bob Martinez. “This is a step in the wrong direction. America’s federal workforce should not be at the mercy of politicians and big corporate donors. Our history has shown that a patronage system, set up to only reward campaign supporters and donors, puts our national security at risk.”

The attack on federal workers continues, as multiple executive orders were signed last week aimed directly at the rights of the two million federal employees and the unions that represent them. The executive orders roll back the clock 50 years on union representation and federal workers’ rights.
One of the newly issued orders limits the amount of time an elected union official can spend in a day to resolve issues for the employees they are bound by law to represent. Official time will now be limited to 25 percent of the work day. This greatly reduces the effectiveness of the problem-solving process and keeps many worker issues from even being addressed. This order also requires the federal government to charge the union rent for using office space in federal buildings and calls for government agencies to be more aggressive in bargaining union contracts.
“These workers, nearly a third of whom are veterans, provide service to our military, take care of our veterans and keep essential government services running efficiently and effectively,” said IAM Government Employees Department Director James Price. “This is just another attack on workers, just like we saw in Wisconsin, and are now seeing in Missouri. It’s union busting by our Federal Government. Our Sisters and Brothers working for the Federal Government deserve the same rights on the job as every other worker in our country.”
Another order signed last week shrinks the length of performance improvement periods and allows managers to fire employees quicker. Probationary periods were also lengthened, forcing new employees to work for a longer amount of time without access to due process.

The Department of Energy has officially given the go-ahead to construct the last three buildings that will make up Y-12 National Security Complex’s long-awaited Uranium Processing Facility.
The $6.5 billion project will be the largest construction project the state has ever seen and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) expects the project to create more than 2,000 jobs during peak construction.
